Red Light Therapy (Photobiomodulation)

Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation (PBM), uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared (NIR) light to support cellular function. It is a non-invasive, drug-free modality used to enhance cellular energy production, support tissue repair, and promote overall wellness. Many biohackers integrate red light therapy to support recovery, mobility, skin health, and mental clarity.

The Science

Red light (~630–670 nm) and near-infrared light (~810–880 nm) penetrate the skin and are absorbed by the mitochondria—the cell’s energy-producing structures. This interaction supports more efficient ATP (cellular energy) production, allowing cells to function more effectively. Red wavelengths primarily affect the skin and superficial tissues, supporting skin quality and circulation. Near-infrared wavelengths penetrate deeper into muscles, joints, and connective tissues. Used together, they support cellular resilience, recovery, and systemic function.

Evidence-Supported Benefits

Increased cellular energy production
Reduced inflammation and joint discomfort
Improved skin tone and collagen support
May reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
Faster recovery from physical training
Enhanced mood and cognitive performance
Supports hair growth and scalp circulation
Promotes circulation and blood flow

How to Integrate into Your Routine

Distance

  • Position the light source approximately 6–12 inches from the body.

Duration

  • 5–15 minutes per treatment area.

Frequency

  • General wellness: 3–5 sessions per week
  • Targeted concerns: daily use may be appropriate

Tips

  • Start at the lower end of exposure time and gradually increase. Consistency and attention to how your body responds are key.
